Nvidia is placing a major bet on Safe Superintelligence, the artificial intelligence startup founded by former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, deepening the chip giant’s involvement in the race to build next-generation AI systems. The investment, announced Monday, comes paired with access to Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin computing platform, which will allow SSI to increase its computing capacity by an order of magnitude. The partnership gives Nvidia a direct relationship with one of the most closely watched research efforts in an industry where breakthroughs increasingly hinge on who can marshal the most resources.
SSI has operated largely behind closed doors since launching in 2024, but it has already attracted enormous financial backing. The company has raised more than $3 billion at a valuation of $32 billion from heavyweight investors including Andreessen Horowitz, DST Global, Greenoaks, and Sequoia Capital. Despite that war chest, one constraint has loomed larger than any other for SSI and its peers: getting enough raw computing power to push the boundaries of what AI can do.
For SSI, the Nvidia deal directly addresses that bottleneck. The company says it has spent the past two years developing a new research direction focused on creating what it calls “safe superintelligence,” a deliberate departure from the industry’s prevailing strategy of simply building ever-larger models. “We have research that is worthy of scaling up, and having access to a big Nvidia computer will let us do so,” Sutskever said in a statement.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang indicated that the partnership came after his company gained a look at SSI’s closely guarded research. He pointed to Sutskever’s long track record in the field, noting that he “pioneered fundamental breakthroughs at the foundation of modern AI, beginning with AlexNet.” Huang added that Nvidia is eager to see what new discoveries SSI can unlock when powered by its latest computing platform.
